"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."
- Nelson Mandela

We can't fight for change without knowing WHAT and WHY we are fighting. Education is key to understanding why the feelings of the black community are so strong and why this movement exists. It's deeply rooted in America's nasty history that (believe it or not) we are still living through to this day.

I have utilized resources such as Just Mercy by Brian Stevenson, 13th on Netflix, and So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo, to educate myself on the criminal justice system and systemic racism in America. As I consider myself an interdisciplinary life-long learner, I am committed to continuing my education on the Black Lives Matter movement and bring what I learn to discussions.

I encourage you to educate yourself on these issues and form a better understanding of this powerful movement.

POPULAR FASHION TRENDS THAT ORIGINATED IN THE BLACK CULTURE

I feel that we do not give enough credit to the black community for being influenced by their culture, especially fashion trends that have been appropriated by the white culture and big brands such as Tommy Hilfiger. It is time we give them that acknowledgement. I am deeply influenced by their culture as I incorporate hoop earrings, gold chains, and sneakers in my everyday style. I have recognized, learned, and understood the meaning of these fashion statements to the black community.

To those who are also influenced by the black culture - music, dance, fashion, etc. - I encourage you to learn its history and significance.

It's important to remember we are guests and we should respect that and acknowledge the privileges we hold.
